A friend asked me the other day if I thought that dance, like music, contains the possibility of movement that is simply objectively wrong. He said that in music there are certain combinations of notes that are this way. Certainly, there are movements that if done on stage in dance would cause uproar. But before Martha Graham technique it was considered an objective reality in dance that the flexed foot was ugly. Whats more, there are certainly musicians experimenting with finding beauty in what some might call objectively ugly sound. Martha Graham put it best in her autobiography Blood Memory;
“Many come to me with conventional notions of prettiness and graceful posturing…Ugliness, I told them, If given a powerful voice, can be beautiful.”
